The Future of the Healthcare System in Hong Kong [11.08.2018]
On the 11th of August 2018, over 70 medical students gathered in Hong Kong to attend a speech given by Professor Sophia Chan, the current secretary of food and health. Medical students ranged from every year group, with the majority studying in the UK. An interactive Q&A session followed after the speech and the event ended with a dinner. What a successful first event of the year!
Aspiring Medical Students [12.08.2018]
On the 12th August, HKMSUK hosted our annual Aspiring Medical Student Talk at the Duke of Windsor Social Services Building with the support of BMA (HK Branch). With over 100 students and parents attending the session. Our speakers including Elizabeth, Teresa, Kenneth, Oscar and Jon each shared their experiences and advice on applying for UK medical schools. Overall, there was positive encouragement from both students and parents and we hope that it had been an informative session.
Opportunities for overseas Doctors in HK [26.09.2018]
On September 26, 2018, the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office held their talk “Opportunities for Overseas Doctors in Hong Kong” in Central London. The talk began with a speech by the Chief Secretary for Administration, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung urging Hong Kong – UK trained medics, to go and work in the Hong Kong Hospital Authority, notably highlighting the many benefits (Investment in HA, Salary) of working in HK compared to UK. After Dr Sharon Wong, from the Department of Health, spoke about the method of transitioning back to Hong Kong, making key remarks about the new 3 year limited registration scheme. Finally, the Chairman of the Hospital Authority, Professor Leong spoke about the working conditions inside the Hospital Authority! After the talk, there was a networking event where many HKMSUK members got to meet doctors, politicians, and HKETO officers. HKMSUK members then went to a social dinner after the networking event! Weekend Getaway in the Peak [21.09.2018]
On the 21st of September 2018, 23 Medical students from various UK universities gathered in Hartington at the Peak District to attend HKMSUK’s first weekend hiking trip! It was a great weekend filled with fun activities, scenic hikes and good, quality time spent together. The weekend trip properly began on Saturday 22nd of September, of which after a wholesome breakfast at the YHA Hartington, we all began our hike at the dove dale stepping stones! We took a bus, traversed a couple of farms, and took a detour to climb a one of the peaks in the area, and finally reached the starting point of our hike at the Dove dale stepping stones. We hiked for a total of 4 hours and 30 minutes, filled with great views and good conversation. That night after dinner, we played 3 fun group activities – Pass the ball, Charades, Balloon Pop – and then went to the pub as a group for a hearty drink. The next day, on Sunday, 17 of us, woke up for an early sunrise hike at 6 AM. Although tired, the sunrise was spectacular. That morning, we spent some time to explore the village of Hartington – a cute little cheese shop - and we took the bus back to Manchester and went for a group Dim Sum! Overall, it was a lovely weekend, and we hope you all join us at our next event!
Meet & Greet [12-14.10.2018]
On the Weekend of October 12-14th, we had our annual meet and greet to welcome new members to HKMSUK! University ambassadors from London, Manchester, Birmingham, Nottingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Sheffield, Southampton, and Newcastle hosted lunches or dinners to meet freshers and new members, whilst also catching up with old friends! It was a great social with excellent turnout - over 100 people :) - and we hope to see you all at our future events! Here are some photos below:
Elective in HK [27.10.2018]
On the 27th of October, over 40 medical students gathered in central London at the Institute of Education to listen to Dr. Jeremy Chan and Dr. Lawrence Nip speak about their experiences of a medical elective in Hong Kong. Their presentations gave insight into the application process for undergoing medical electives at CUHK and HKU, the pair also shared their thoughts about the Hong Kong medical system and Hong Kong medical education. Dr. Chan also gave a brief presentation on audits and QI’s, highlighting their importance in applications for core training and registrar jobs. After the event, half of the attendees joined the committee and Dr. Nip for a social dinner at the Hare and Tortoise.
Christmas Social [08.12.2018]
On December 8th, 2018, 23 HKMSUK members from all over UK met up for a lovely Christmas social. The night started out with a dinner at Laksamania where we had some delicious laksa :) Following dinner, we strolled through the decorated Oxford street to see some of the christmas lighting and ended up at Winter Wonderland - where we had fun ice skating, eating yummy chocolate churros and drinking mulled wine!! All in all, it was great night catching up with fellow members while enjoying the christmas festivities! Hope to see you all at our next event!
Chinese New Year Social [02.02.2019]
On February 2, 2019, 25 HKMSUK members gathered for a Chinese New Year social! We went for some delicious dim sum at Imperial China and had the chance to catch up with each other. Then, we made our way to Sky Gardens to enjoy the beautiful London Skyline! It was a lovely day and great way to celebrate chinese new year. We hope you all have a happy new year and can make it to our next event! :)
HKMLE - There and Back [23.03.2019]
On March 23, 2019, we held our annual HKMLE talk! This year, it was held at HKETO (Hong Kong Economic Trade Office) and our talk began with an overview of HKETO and the Hospital Authority’s limited registration scheme given by Dr. Sharon Wong. Then, our lovely speakers, Dr. Jeffery Lau and Dr. Karen Ho talked about their experiences of the internship ship year in HK, tips on preparing for the HKMLE, career progression in UK and HK, and how to return to the UK. It was an insightful talk, which was then followed by an informal Q and A session. After the talk, we gathered for a lovely traditional Chinese dinner at Joy King Lau! This concludes HKMSUK’s events for the academic year of 2018-19. We hope you all enjoyed our events, and we hope to see you all in the coming year!
