On February 1, 2020, HKMSUK hosted our annual CNY event! This year we began with some lovely dim sum at imperial China, followed by a nice walk at St James’s Park. After the walk, we had some fun bonding over games like Werewolf! All in all, it was great to catch up with older members and to meet new ones as well!

Hope to see you all at our next event!

On December 14th, 25 HKMSUK members from different places over the UK gathered up for our annual Christmas Social. We went to The Old Dutch Restaurant for some delicious sweet and savoury pancakes, and had a lovely time catching up with each other. After the dinner, we went to for some board games at Imperial College London. We had an amazing and fun time playing Werewolf, everyone was engaged and enjoyed the game so much! It was a very lovely time spent with you all celebrating Christmas, and we hope to see you at our next event!

The HKMSUK wishing you a merry Christmas and a wonderful new year!

At The Crossroads Conference

[09.11.2019]

On November 9th, HKMSUK held our first ever medical conference, in conjunction with SMSUK (Singaporean Medical Society of UK) and MMI (Malaysian medics international)! It was a brilliant event with outstanding, renowned speakers and hands-on, useful workshops. We hope everyone was able to enjoy, learn and meet new people at the conference! The conference began with a morning of lectures by speakers: Prof Alan Fenwick, Dr Daniel Ting, Dr Calver Pang, and Dr Lawrence Nip. They each delivered very insightful medical lectures that were both practical (ie. CV building) and medically interesting. We thank them for taking time out of their day to come speak.

After speakers, we invited a panel of speakers from respective backgrounds of Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong to answer any questions that posed medical students. It was a great way to get a better understanding about routes to practice in respective countries, and general advice for medical students.

Following a delicious lunch, we also held a poster presentation! Thank you to those 8 participants who had presented, and to the judges: Dr Daniel Ting, Dr Enlin Goh, and Dr Rafidah Abdullah.

After lunch, we held several workshops that included topics on: Suturing, O+G, CMT/CST talks, Nephrology, CV building, AFP, A+E, Breast Surgery and Paediatrics. It was a wide range of workshops that hopefully was able to deliver informative and practical skills!

This was HKMSUK first medical conference, and we hope to continue and delivery such big events in the future. We hope to see you all there!

Meet & Greet [20.10.2019]

Throughout the month of October, University Ambassadors held regional “Meet and Greet” events across the UK. At the 8 UK hubs, there was stellar participation with over 16+ universities totalling up to 130 members!

Particularly in London, we had a record high of 54 members from London, Brighton and Sussex, and Southampton medical schools. We hope you all had a great time and hope to see you again at our future events.

Kind thanks to all the hard-working University Ambassadors for organising the gatherings and AMBOSS for sponsoring this event. All in all, it was a great event to kick off the new year of 2019-2020 and excellent way to meet the new freshers!

Weekend Getaway with HiKeMSUK

[20-22.09.2019]

This year, HiKeMSUK organised a hiking trip at Edale in the Peak District! A stroke of luck allowed us to enjoy the entire hike under a cloudless sky, and needless to say we had an absolute blast! We trekked over the peaks and were treated with awe-inspiring landscapes all round. The group games in the evening also garnered never-ending laughs.

We finished off the trip with lunch at Manchester Chinatown - a fitting end for a weekend in the wilderness.

Hope you can join us in our future events!

Aspiring Medical Students [11.08.2019]

We hosted our annual Aspiring Medics event on the 11th August, with the help of speakers:
-    Kristie Leung (University College London – Year 4)
-    Rebecca Lee (University of Manchester – Year 2)
-    Christopher Cheng (University of Cambridge – Year 3)
-    Alison Cheung (St. George’s University – Year 5)
-    Agatha Chu (Newcastle University – Year 3)
Parents and students were given the opportunity to learn about entry requirements of universities, how to perform well at aptitude tests and interviews, and writing a good personal statement. More importantly, they received first-hand feedback from our panel of experienced medical students from their individual universities regarding university life as a medical student, and why they chose their respective institutions. Additionally, they gave tips regarding the intricate practicalities not mentioned upfront at open days, including moving house and travel when universities assign distant placements.

Homecoming: Working and Training Opportunities in HK [10.08.2019]

HKMSUK were delighted to welcome a panel of foreign-trained doctors working under the limited registration scheme to speak about their careers under the scheme. Dr. Sharon Wong detailed the Hospital Authority’s scheme including entry requirements, with emphasis to new improvements with regards to career progression. Dr. Michael Wong, Dr. Anthony Chan, Dr. Howard Chan, and Dr. Kelvin Choi gave valuable insight into their journeys post-medical school, and shared memorable anecdotes about their everyday lives as specialists under this scheme.
Perhaps just as attention grabbing was their individual experiences with the HKMLE (Hong Kong Medical Licentiate Exam). Our audience of 100+ listened intently and gratefully as we were given invaluable insider information on the toughest parts of the dreaded exam, and how it interlinks with the limited registration scheme.
